Greatdayndamornin'/Booty
by D'Angelo
J Dilla had a heavy influence on D'Angelo's "Voodoo" album, and it shows. I find "Greatdayndamornin'/Booty" to be a good example.
Questlove had already incorporated a lot of J Dilla's swing into the way he played drums, with his adjusted "drunk" drumming. In addition, D'Angelo would ask the bassist, Pino Palladino, to play his bass with a delay, so it could sound more like the Dilla beats they were hearing in the studio next door.
It's just crazy to me. Dilla was so ahead of his time. I wonder if artists wanted to sound like Marvin, before Marvin was Marvin?
